Author Jodi Ambrose heard that I was posting a ladybird as my Photo of the Day today, and she wanted me to post more photos, so here are a few that I took and were okayish to use.
EDIT: Jennifer Windram has informed me that the final picture, the spiky thing is actually a baby ladybug. Thank you for that Jennifer, I appreciate your input.
I loved them all tooi this is a wonderful post, Thank you dear Al, love, nia
Thank you Nia. I am glad you liked them
I love ladybugs/ladybirds. At this time of year, as the days shorten and are usually slightly cooler, and the nights most definitely fresher, hundreds often flock and attach themselves to warmed house sides, window panes and some are ingenuous enough to find ways in, other than buzz-flitting through an opened door. Inside they fly about, and crawl up the walls, often heading towards a light source, which I guess means they are seeking heat. I adore this and choose to let them be welcome in my home. They are entertainment for the cat and dog too – but mostly are wise enough to stay well out of harm’s reach.
Great shots!
Thank you. I love seeing them. The funny thing today was that my daughter came back from her mum’s house with ladybug earrings in 🙂
I would love to see them, all in side. I would spend hours photographing them
Lol – big 🙂 …. coincidence? the ladybug/bird earrings? that is wonderful …. I don’t have ladybug/bird earrings – but rather dragonflies. Love them too. Have any shots of them, perhaps?
They (ladybugs/birds) are fascinating and so industrious. Mind-blowing.
I wish I did have photos of them. I have been terrified of them for many years since I was 10 and ran into a woods. I came out screaming with my back smothered in stings. I was told they were dragonfly stings so for many years as soon as I saw a dragonfly, I got out of there. In this last year, I have seen wasps, bees and dragonflies all together, and I think I may have disturbed a wasps nest or something there.
I did try and photograph one a month or so ago, but the silly thing flew in front of a lorry and splatted
Oh no!
I’m sorry to hear that you have experienced traumatic experiences regarding dragonflies. As far as I know, they don’t actually sting (I may be wrong- but am fairly confident). Perhaps you disturbed a wasps nest.
I’ve been pelted by dragon/damselflies as they are swooping about catching bugs – their loopy-zoom air acrobatics are something – and I wasn’t *stung* but the hit/impact DID hurt. It felt like I had been pelted by a small rock.
As for photographing them – it can be really difficult – unless you come across them in a pond or water source and it’s something like mating season or it is their hang out.
Sorry again to hear about the bad experience. Had the same type of thing with garter snakes – which is why I still *lose* it whenever I see any type of snake. Yuck.
Cheers. 🙂
I did a lot of research this year which really, I should have done before, and found nothing on dragonfly stings. So now, after 36 years, I realise i could have been enjoying them
They really a spectacular creatures – but there are many who find them absolutely creepy. *shrugging* – well at least you now can begin to be comfortable with them, if you choose – so that’s a healing step. 🙂
It is. I even went looking for them.
Well then congrats on overcoming your fears. Brave man. (And I mean that sincerely. )
Thank you 🙂 Overcoming fears is not easy when you have close to forty years of it
I *so* hear you.
🙂
What an awesome collection of photos Al – very cool!!
Thanks Bec 🙂
Amazing catches.
Thank you 🙂 I loved taking these photos. I would have loved to be able hop over the fence and take even more
Thanks for helping me learn a new thing today. That baby looks like a caterpillar!
I haven’t forgotten your prompt… If not today… tomorrow 🙂
Thanks for your visits. Much appreciated.
You’re welcome. I learned some new things as well. I love it when that happens.
There’s no hurry with the prompt. It’s open for a week 🙂
How cute is that!
They are. Loved seeing them
Usually the babies are the cutest of the bunch, but in this case I believe the mother (father?) wins in the looks department. 🙂
🙂 Thank you LuAnn.
Ever so clever title Alastair! Have a love a ladybug’s picnic! Cease the day! Robyn
Thanks Robyn. I had to check that the title was right. I wasn’t sure if it was Ladybirds Picnic or Ladybugs Picnic 🙂
Oh no, you had to remind me of those little critters, the red ones are alright, but here, the brown ones bite and it hurts
Do they? I didn’t know that. I thought that was only the yellow ones that did.
om BUG!! the baby bug!! a revelation!!
I love the baby bug. So glad I decided to use that one
How did you zoom in so close? They look larger than life.
I didn’t have my proper macro filter, so I used a +10 and a +4 together and was nearly on top of them. The one on the blade of grass was the hardest to photograph as it was all over the place. I thought I had it flying, but when I checked, I only have concrete lol
I think these are one of your best lots of photos, they are beautiful.
Thank you so much for that huge compliment Sandra. I really appreciate it
I love Ladybugs or Ladybirds as I call them. By getting such close up shots I feel like I am in amongst them, really amazing. Thank you.
Thank you. I call them Ladybirds as well. I think the majority of people call them ladybugs though, so that’s why I called it that.
Really! Glad you told me that.
The song is also called Ladybug’s Picnic. I think it is just us in the UK that call it a Ladybird
Thanks Al, it’s good to know that, as I have a fair few followers from the USA. I think ‘Ladybird’ is great because they can fly.
Yes I do as well. It actually feels awkward for me to say Ladybug as I am used to saying Ladybird
You rock!
uh .. thanks
Okay. You fly like a ladybird and sing like a ladybug or a malebird or malebug. (Don’t worry, it’s late…my imagination runs away with itself – I can feel a kid’s story coming on.)
Haha 😀 A manniebird or manniebug
Sounds good.
Sounds great.
🙂
Lots of luck here! 🙂
There is. And that doesn’t include the ones I didn’t use
Very beautiful pictures, Alastair ! Ladybugs are so cute !
In my country there is an old habit. Adolescent girls, when they find a ladybugs, keep it in your hand and say this song : “Ladybugs , Ladybugs ! Get in the cart, and where you’ll go, there I will marry ! ” – Do not know if it was confirmed this, but the idea is funny!
Have a quiet night , Alastair ! 🙂
Sounds cute 🙂 Did you ever find the ladybug of your dreams? Have a great evening
awww I love ladybugs and that special moment when they land on you. Good luck right?
That’s what I’ve heard 🙂 I think they are gorgeous. Although they make my daughter freak
They are definitely more than okay Al
you have some great looking ladybirds here 🙂
Andro
Thank you Andro. It didn’t help not having my proper macro filter.
I think that only likeminded
photographers would notice that Al
as everyone else sees brilliance 🙂
Andro
Thank you. Maybe I will at some point
Great photos. I’m a huge ladybug fan. And I like that you snapped one with a ladybug baby. They are so strange looking before they become the bugs we all recognize as ladybugs 🙂
Thanks Jennifer. Which one is the baby? Sorry, I know nothing about them. They were just everywhere along the road from me
Oh, it’s the weird alligator looking thingy in the last picture. When they first hatch they look like that. They eat a ton of aphids (at least in my garden, that’s what they eat) and then they make a cocoon like capsule (like a butterfly) and become the adult ladybug. You can Google it, it’s pretty cool.
I only know this because I became obsessed with getting rid of aphids in my garden and ladybug babies have voracious appetites 🙂 So, no pesticides needed!
Wow. I actually thought it was a dead one. Didn’t realise it was a baby. Thank you 😀
Okayish…… they are all great, so sweet and perfect. I love them all! You are too critical with yourself!
Thank you Ute. I felt they were too out of focus
Not at all! Not at all!
Thank you. I appreciate that
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Thank you, sweetheart. They are great! I love the two little guys together. 🙂 xo
I know, they are cute 🙂 I was hoping they would be clearer so I could use them for the photo of the day. Well, they made it to the picnic anyway 🙂
Thank you
