Whilst I was on my tour this morning, visiting bl0gs, I went the blog of Cristian Lisandru and he had this song in the corner of his post. I had forgotten about this artist and that I used to listen to her about 25 years ago. This particular track was released in 1988 and failed to break the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100 only making it as far as number 48. It did reach number 19 of the US Adult Contemporary Charts though. After the album this was on failed to go anywhere, the singer went into a decline and failed to break the top fifty until 1996. This track was re-released in 2001 as a duet with the late, great Luciano Pavarotti for his album Pavarotti and Friends for Cambodia and Tibet which reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart. In 1997, Boyzone released this as a “Double A-Side” for their non-album track “Shooting Star”. Ronan Keating then released it as his own single in 2005. I don’t think anyone can beat the original though with her amazing voice.

I was looking on YouTube for a track that I heard today and thought I would use it for my music of the day. Then I glanced at the side bar and it  suggested one that I also, so I started playing the official video to see what it was like and saw the side bar again, and this time I went cold There was a track that I loved when it hit number one in 1974. I remember I always used to do the actions, I used to march, I used to wear a hat that I would throw down and even at the age of seven, the song would make me cry. The only thing I couldn’t do was whistle. (I still can’t properly now 😆 )So I knew I had to use it today. I am in an incredible amount of pain – more then I have for a long time. Thankfully my son helped me with dinner tonight even though he is not well himself. My daughter offered to do the washing up afterwards. I have a pair of wonderful kids. Even if they are teenagers 😉

Back to this track. This was from 1974 and a Nottingham based group that had two hits in the UK and only this one in the US. The song is about a young man who joins the army in the American Civil War even though his fiancé didn’t want him to. She wanted him to stay and marry her. The song is extremely sad and I remember watching this particular video on TV in black and white. I haven’t watched this yet, I hoping I don’t end up with wet cheeks again.

This track was released January 1981 and spent four weeks at number two in the UK Singles Chart, never reaching the top spot. It was kept off by John Lennon’s Imagine after his assassination. It won Single of the Year at the 1981 Brit Awards. It has been voted Britain’s Favourite Song to Peak at Number Two in a 2012 poll. It didn’t touch the charts in America. It was re-released in 1993 but only peaked at number 13 and again didn’t touch the charts in the US.
