Secrets of Startech – A Review

HASH2aSecrets of Startech is the second book in the Imprint Trilogy by April M Reign following on from Human Alien Species Hybrid (H.A.S.H.) which I reviewed yesterday.

***

“Secrets of Startech” is the second book in the Imprint trilogy and picks up two days after the end of H.A.S.H. The escapees are adrift and Em has disappeared. After being rescued and subsequently arriving at the house they were directed to, they meet a professor who knows more than he should about the imprints.

With Startech on their heels, Aric and Jade need to learn more about their imprints if they are to retrieve what they left behind in the laboratory. The professor they are staying with holds a dark secret that may jeopardise their future.

The key to unlocking the secrets of the imprints is unlocking the secrets of Aric and Jade’s past. What they find out is nothing short of astounding. They also find more than they wanted to know and some very terrifying information.

The twist near the end stunned me; I definitely did not see it coming. Reign reigns with her storytelling in this book running with the same style and capturing the mind of the reader, placing them there with everyone. The way the book ends, leaves you wanting more.

I look forward to the next book to be released next year. Once again, this book receives 5 stars

H.A.S.H. Human Alien Species Hybrid – A Review

I first saw this book being plugged on Twitter, so I thought I would download it for my Kindle and see what it was like. To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement.

The book is a first person account from a girl named Jade who has spent sixteen years in a Scientific Institution following an accident when she was three years old. The accident claimed the lives of her parents and Jade ended having an implant in her, which caused an invisible to materialise to her. Although this invisible friend is more than that. The friend has a name – Emerald – due to the colour of her eyes, although Jade and everyone at the institution call her Em. Jade is the only person able to see Em due to the implant.

During the book, Jade is introduced to a nineteen year old boy called Aric who also seems to have the same kind of implant, and he can converse with Em. When Jade and Aric touch, secrets are unlocked, and Em is then able to access computers and read emails. This is where she finds a sinister plan, and there is only one thing they can do – escape the institution they have both lived in for the last sixteen years.

This first book in the trilogy introduces us to Jade, Em and Aric and explains the origins of the implants and what they mean to the three of them. Dealing with the death of a friend shows that protagonists are not closed off so as not to feel emotion. The descriptions of their surroundings allows you to see what the facility looks like in your mind.

The explosive climax of the book is well written and leaves you breathless. I wanted to pick up the next book immediately to see what happens (I did that and you can see the review of that tomorrow).

The book is aimed at young adults, and is a very easy read. It’s well written and worth reading more than once. Out of five, this is a definite FIVE stars.

I’d escaped away into the world of witchcraft and sorcery or vampires and werewolves. One of my simple pleasures was to smell old books while I’d read them.

My dreams had changed, too. They were still about the crash, as often as not, but now others joined them. Dreams about Aric, about the moment we kissed.
