Photo Fiction: The Haunted Castle

I have another blog which is for Photo Fiction. Every week I post a photo that I have taken and use it as a prompt for stories, poems etc. The idea is to be in the region of 150 words. I thought I would take a break from the ongoing story of the invasion of a planet.

The Haunted Castle

The three of them broke into the castle. Cobwebs were everywhere. The last king died thirty years previously and left no heir, so the castle emptied of people until a relative turned up.

Of course, reports of ghosts became commonplace. Headless horsemen, wailing women wearing white, the king. They didn’t believe any of it though, figuring locals created the stories to frighten would-be treasure hunters. The three of them entered unperturbed anyway.

Going from room to room, they laughed as they defaced the walls using paint spray cans. One of them stopped having heard a sound. He raised his hand calling for quiet. Creeping around the corner, they found the winch to the well moving. The fear in them was palpable; they dropped their cans and ran, pushing themselves off walls to keep their speed up.

A sack moved and a man stood up, laughing as he untied the string.

  1. Your story reminds me of a current news story where three ‘lads’ where caught inside a ‘condemed’ building. What does the sign mean when it says: Do Not Enter. While your ‘guys’ got a good scaring – the ‘lads’ got caught by the police, because of an observant neighbor.

  2. Love it! What a great story! Castles are intriguing and beautiful and you haunted it up very nicely. I was so drawn in and then it ended on me! 🙂

  3. Very nice story, Alastair! It reminds me of the stories I’ve read in childhood!
Thank you for sharing! Have a wonderful Sunday Alastair! 🙂
