I’m Confused

I know it’s not hard to confuse me as I’m a bit dense. I have noticed that since yesterday (April 24th) people have been clicking like on a post that I … posted … in 2010. Almost two years before I had more than one reader.

Can someone who has clicked like on “Something In Pictures” please let me know how you knew about this post please. When one person clicked like, I thought maybe she had clicked on Random Post, but then more and more people were doing it.

Confused, I am. Yess.

  1. Alastair, that blogger, Transcending Borders, also follows my blog. Perhaps she or someone else was searching for something on the Net and pulled up a link to your blog that matched the key words for your post. Occasionally, I get a like or a comment about something I posted on my blog last year. If you look up “16th century German helmets” in Google, you’ll pull up a post I made on my blog on March 5, 2012 with that exact title. That’s why it’s essential to have certain key words relevant to your posts, so more traffic will come to your blog.

    • Just had a reply from someone who said that the reader mixes old and new posts, so they may have all been legitimate.

Damn .. yours is the first one with that search 😆

    • Hmmm. They are all people who already read my blog. If it was random “drifters” I don’t think it would bother me so much. Although maybe I should just leave it anyway. It’s not as if they will actually do anything

  2. I think it’s what I’d call the underbelly of the current blogging/internet world. By that I mean, whether it’s spam or a glitch in the wordpress system or some other unknown, its because wordpress is growing and becoming more interconnected with other media. Stands to reason there will be more of this sort of thing happening in vulnerable areas. It seems to go with the whole package of technology that we (people) create and use but aren’t truly understanding of how the whole thing really works! Just my thoughts, and unfortunately not a solution. Good luck with this Alastair! 🙂

    • Thanks Penny. I haven’t heard anything from them yet, but I don’t expect to. I’m a little fish to them. They won’t see it as an important issue. I think as far as they are concerned, as long as I am getting likes, I should be happy with it.

Oh well, going to change my password anyway

  3. I only get likes now from those I allowed to do that when I had the like button, but I’ve taken that option away from ‘strangers’. And apparently folks can still ‘like’ from their reader area if they follow you. Even at “B” I’ve been getting some strange ‘hits’ on older posts – even though I clearly state that unrelated anonymous comments will not be posted I’ve been getting some odd stuff. Today on WP I got a comment that was all in another language. I back tracked it and it was some kind of promotional sales site. So I marked it as spam and trashed it. That foreign language comment was attached to another comment from a post in 2012.

  4. Alastair it is interesting you mention this… i have noticed that I get so many hits on a random old post that is not even a post but a “page” linked from a post (Symbolic Meaning Of Feathers)… I have never investigated but it is a curiosity now. Just though lots of people must be trying to learn more about feathers…??! Let me know if you solve this mystery ~ 🙂 xrl

  5. I have the feeling that there’s a leak in WordPress.com. Try visiting a WordPress.com blog on a mobile device and click on any link. You’ll be overrun by pop-up ads. Perhaps those spam likes are just another way of using that leak.

  6. Yes, they all say clicked like, in mine too. I asked to some of bloggers and they answered that none of them did!!!!! You are welcome and Thanks, love, nia

  7. Maybe somebody has created Pingback to that particular post? Or it contains a topic that is relevant now, and it is being picked up by the search bar… I’m intrigued!

  8. Dear Alastair, do you remember I have a problem like that a few weeks ago? It is what happens now to your blog. You should inform the technical team also you can say it is same problem with nia (www.photographyofnia.com) because they haven’t solve the problem yet… You can write email to who liked your post and I am sure they will say no we haven’t visited and made a like click!!!!! This is something like a spam… but they can’t solve… I have been still receiving information mails that showing who liked BUT as you noticed not for now, for my old post in afew years ago!!!!!! You will take a pictures of your information mails and also you will give another picture of your post that people so seemed liked to the technical team… They want this, screen shots. And I hope they can solve this problem… my archieve now full of so many e-mails like that I can’t delete them for now… Good Luck dear Alastair, love, nia

    • Thanks Nia. I’ll check with them, and if they haven’t, then I’ll mail them. I have all of the emails saying they clicked like. Thank you, and don’t worry about your English, I can understand what you were saying 🙂
