This song was released originally in 1967 by David and Jonathan and then one of these two also released it in the same year. It reached number five in the UK singles chart but didn’t make a dent or a scratch in the US. It was covered by Vicky Leandros, Cilla Black, Darren Burn, Terry Reid, Joe McElderry and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This version though, is where it achieved it’s greatest success. The other singer had it on his studio album in 1988, and then joined with the other artist to release it as a single in 1989 where it reached number one and stayed there for four weeks. The two vocalists appeared on the Wogan show as their song was climbing the charts, and as that was a very popular program at the time, helped it reached the top spot. It still didn’t breach the charts in America though. It only reached number one in the UK, Switzerland and Germany.
Gene Pitney and Marc Almond – Something’s Gotten Hold of my Heart
one of my favourites, still remember watching the video on uk top 40 when i was still a wee lad. 🙂
It is an awesome song
Never heard of this song. Thanks Alastair! 🙂
You’re welcome. 😉
I remember this!! I grew up in Brunei (used to be a British protectorate in case you never heard of it) but if I had lived here in the Philippines then I wouldn’t have heard this song. I heard it a couple of times because one of my favorite DJs used to play it back then…funny how songs bring back certain memories… 🙂
Some of my daughter’s friends’ dads were Gurkhas, and they were posted to Brunei.
It is odd how songs can stir memories. There’s some that bring up unwanted memories for me, as well as some that bring up fantastic ones 🙂
This one brings up pleasant memories for me. I used to listen to the radio instead of taking a nap after school. I don’t have a good singing voice but I would sing along to favorite songs when I could. 🙂 This wasn’t a big favorite but I heard it often enough on pleasant days.
Cool 🙂
Don’t think I have ever heard this song! Peculiar as it’s obviously well known 🙂 You mention Vicky Leandros, one of my favourite artists, love her!
Cool 😀
Morning from Oz, Alstair! Not sure about this song! Hope it’s getting warmer for you over there? hugs Paula xxxx
Thanks Paula. It is getting warmer here now 🙂
