I was surprised today when I looked out of the window and saw something I don’t normally see. The sun!!! No, seriously, I didn’t see that. What I did see though, was a hovercraft of sorts. And they don’t look very polite in the water.

Still Trying to Figure Things Out
I will give away my age now. When I was a little boy I was on holiday somewhere near Dover/Brighton/? My dad heard that a Hovercraft was going to make its maiden voyage across the channel from France. It inspired him to go out and buy an good pair of binoculars (he was not noted for his spending on ‘trinkets’. etc) We then headed off to some high cliffs (may be Beachy Head) and watched this big plumb of water heading towards England. We later went down to the harbor and all I can remember is a rather makeshift unit with a big engine and the overpowering smell of kerosene…… I can say ‘I was there’. I can though claim in later life to have been on the I.O.W Hovercraft, fun but still that overpowering smell of the fuel.
That would have been Dover and you would have been on the cliffs right behind me or along the road. I can’t remember if they used the Eastern docks or the Western docks. That was, I believe, 1966. The noise as well … it was deafening.
It was earlier than that….it was the first ever prototype. Funny how it was the smell that remained so long in the mind.
Yes. I remember when I went to see the Speedway for the first time – I went to see Olly Olsen and the Coventry Bees. The smell of that was unique.
I’ve always wanted to ride one! What a site to see!
It was. 🙂
And you just posted to me that you did not drink????
It is a strange site.
LOL It is indeed. I have other photos of it, but this one was the best (in mine and my kids’ opinions) because of the water displacement.
I think I meant strange SIGHT.
No, not drinking.
I figured you meant sight, so did I lol
wow, that’s not a boat? It sure does look to be kicking up some wake there! great panoramic shot, A!
Thanks Karen. When I saw it coming in, I couldn’t believe it. We haven’t had a hoverport for [checks dates] twenty years. So seeing a hovercraft coming in is certainly a rarity
